Baseballs
Used
in
Curve
Ball
Experiments
. In
1951
the
Federal
Trade
Commission
asked
the
National
Bureau
of
Standards
(NBS)
to
make
a
comparative
study
of
baseballs
made
by
different
companies
. The
results
were
reported
as
Test
G-4755
,
February
16
,
1951
.
Retired
NBS
director
and
physicist
Lyman
J
.
Briggs
took
an
interest
in this
test
,
which
led
him to
make
further
studies
of
aerodynamic
effects
on the
spinning
of
baseballs
and
golf
balls
. At the
time
,
it
was not
known
if a
thrown
baseball
actually
curved
, or if this was
just
an
optical
illusion
.
Briggs
work
proved
that a a
baseball
could
in
fact
curve
. These
baseballs
were
used
in his
experiments
.

Golf
Balls
. At
various
times
the
NBS
, has also been
consulted
for
scientific
advice
on
various
characteristics
of
such
objects
as
golf
balls
.
One
request
came
from the
U.S
.
Golf
Association
in
1929
and
later
ones
from the
Federal
Trade
Commission
and a
joint
committee
of the
American
and
National
Baseball
leagues
.

Briggs
took
an
active
interest
in these
studies
. These
golf
balls
,
found
in his
laboratory
after
his
death
in
1963
, were
presumably
used
in these
studies
.
